Shakin' and Stirred

It wasn't big, but there was a little shakin' Friday night just before 10pm.

It was a 2.7 centered in the Marina, about 2 miles away. I was at my desk typing away when I noticed everything start to shake for a second or two. Nothing big, but just a nice little reminder that the Newport-Inglewood Fault is alive and kicking!

The drought is over...earthquake drought that is...

So finally it ends...after 4 plus years of no quakes, I finally get to feel one again!

It was 4:07 by my bedroom clock when I awoke suddenly. Not the groggy, drowsy waking but the insta-awake adrenaline shot. What must have been the initial jolt woke me, with what sounded like someone banging their fist on the wall next to my head. Once that shock subsided there was about 3-4 seconds of pretty sharp, high frequency rattling. I could head pictures in my home office shaking pretty good. And then it was over. I spent the next hour or so awake listening to KNX and checking out info on the internet. No aftershocks were to be had...

From the data and commentary from Cal-Tech it seems this was related to the Newport-Inglewood fault. A fault that's produced a couple of nice quakes in the past, the largest recent one being in Long Beach in the 30s.

Ah, well, it's good to be back in the saddle again...it's crazy but I love that roller coaster-like feel I get during quakes. Pretty much like the ride has left the station and even though you may be scared shitless and want it to stop, it's going to continue until it's over whether you want it to or not...

Fun times!

3.4 in Carson

Sadly I slept through it...friends in Redondo Beach reported it as being very sharp and sudden...

BORE---ING!

Back in LA for 7 months now and not a quake to be felt.

There have been a couple close by---one I didn't feel and one that I was out of town for...
